All Highland dancers that compete in highland dancing competitions must register annually with the ACT Regional Committee of Highland Dancing Inc. Registrations are from January to December each year. The annual cost is $40.00.  This amount is forwarded to the ACTRCHDI Registrar with the registration form, two photographs of the dancer, stamped self-addressed envelope and current registration card.

Primary

Dancers who are under 7 years of age

Primary dancers compete in the following dances:Pas De Basque, Pas De Basque and Highcuts, Fling and Swords

Registration Card Colour Green

Beginners

Newly registered dancers. Beginners has six squares to be marked, this is done by placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd at six different competitions in any dance, or reaches TWELVE months following the first Beginners stamp, whichever is the later. . When this is done the dancer moves to Novice.

Beginners compete in the following dances: Fling, Swords, Seann Triubhas, Strathspey and Highland Reel, Reel of Tulloch (rarely), Scottish Lilt and Flora McDonalds Fancy

Registration Card Colour Blue

Novice

Novice has six squares to be marked, this is done by placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd at six different competitions in any dance, or reaches TWELVE months following the first Novice stamp, whichever is the later. The dancer then moves to Intermediate.

Novice dancers compete in the following dances: Fling, Swords, Seann Triubhas, Strathspey and Highland Reel, Reel of Tulloch (rarely), Scottish Lilt and Flora McDonalds Fancy

Registration Card Colour Yellow

Intermediate

The dancer has six squares to be marked, this is done by placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd at six different competitions in any dance or the dancer remains in Intermediate for 1 year from the date of the first competition entered in this level, whichever is the later.

Intermediate dancers can compete in the same dances as for Beginners and Novice plus - Irish Jig, Sailors Hornpipe, Barracks Johnnie, Highland Laddie

Registration Card Colour Pink

Premier

Once out of Intermediate the dancer progresses to Premier

At this level a dancer can compete in Championships. Championships consist of a 6 step Fling, Sword Dance 3 & 1 (or 2 & 2), Sean Triubhas 4 & 2 and a Reel. Other dances a Premier Dancer can do are as for Intermediate plus - Blue Bonnets, Village Maid, Earl of Errol and Scotch Measure
